The Torquil Enigma

43

Jane tugged on his hand. She thought they’d said enough to be going on with. Torquil said he wanted to stay. Angus offered to go and collect some of his things, and Torquil handed over his keys.

While he was gone, Jane made them all tea and sandwiches. When Master Angus got back, she brought the tray out, and placed it on a small table. Turning around she went back to collect the teapot. She hit her hand on the kitchen surface and bent over in agony. Clutching one hand to her breast, she held it there. Angus was up and had her in his arms in a flash.

“What have you done, mo run? Where have you hurt yourself?”

Wordlessly, Jane held up her hand. The base of her thumb was a swollen joint full of arthritis. He took her hand in his and very, very gently ran his thumb over the swollen joint. She winced, and he raised the hand to his lips, gently kissing the place where she’d hurt herself.

“Will it be okay? Do you need to go and see my friend? I hate to see you in pain, mo run!”

“No, Master, just clumsiness on my part. It will be fine.”

“Never clumsiness, mo run, just a wee bit overenthusiastic. You need to slow down or ask for help!”

Turning to Master Torquil, she said, “Carpe diem, Master Torquil.

You are going to stay and look after her so you have an excellent opportunity to let her know how much you care, to tell her how you feel about her now!”

They sat and ate the sandwiches and drank their tea in companionable silence. Jane felt she’d said quite enough. She’d given Master Torquil more than sufficient to think about. When she’d tidied away, and Torquil had offered to wash the dishes, she and Angus left.

As she was leaving, she reached up on tiptoe, patted his cheek, and said to Master Torquil, “It will be all right, you mark my words. Good night. Call us if you need us.”
